Social media for SMEs: how to build content with rhythm and data

Posting only when someone remembers, with no idea what works, is a common SME problem. Four steps to content with direction, rhythm and measurable results.

“We post on Instagram, but we don’t know if it works.” We hear this more than anything else. The problem is rarely effort. It is usually three missing things: direction, rhythm and data.

These four steps take you from posting when someone remembers to a content routine that keeps running.

Step 1: Set your positioning and content pillars

Start with one question: after seeing your content, what should customers remember about you?

Then choose three content pillars. For a café, that might be:

  • Product: new beans, new dishes, brewing methods
  • Behind the scenes: the team, sourcing, daily life in the shop
  • Customers: regulars’ stories and shared moments

With pillars in place, you never start from a blank page.

Step 2: Plan a 30-day content calendar

Plan a month of posts in advance, balanced across the three pillars. You get:

  • A steady posting rhythm customers get used to
  • Time to prepare materials instead of rushing
  • A quick view of whether your content is balanced

Step 3: Use A/B testing to find hooks that work

The same post with a different opening line can perform very differently. Prepare two versions for some posts and compare engagement. Over time you learn what your audience responds to.

Step 4: Review the numbers after 30 days

Record a baseline before you start, then look at what changed after 30 days. Watch:

  • Reach: how many people saw it
  • Saves and shares: whether the content was genuinely useful
  • Enquiries: whether it brought real business

The point of the numbers is not a score. It is knowing what to do more and less of next month.

Where AI helps

AI helps you brainstorm topics, draft copy and produce visuals faster, so the same hours produce more content. Direction and judgement still come from people, and that is what separates good content from noise.
